Shower in Ohio.—It ap pears from the following communication addressed to Professor Henry, of the Smithsonian Institu tion, says the National Intelligencer, that a fine view ot one of the great mineral nieteorie visita tions of the 1st of last month was had by a gentle man whilst riding into the country, near Parkers burg, Virgins. The account is highly graphic and interesting. Parkehsburo, (Va.) May 20, 1860. * * * About noon on Tuesday, the 1st in stant, I wa.s riding into the country in a south- ea.sterly direction from Parkersburg, when just as I had crossed a small covered bridge about three miles troiu town, I looked up at the sky towards the northeast to see -^f there were any indications of rain. The sky was overcast with fleecy clouds, with the exception of a circular spot thirty-five or forty degrees in diameter, extending from a point forty degrees above the horizon, towards the zenith. While looking at this clear space a huge ball of fire shot out from behind the cloud to wards the southeast, and passing with immense velocity across this open space, soon disappeared behind the clouds towards the northwest. The ball was followed by a beautiful well-defined cone of fire, the length of which was ten or twelve time.'; the diameter of the ball, which appeared to be very near if not quite as large as the full moon. The ball, which formed the base of the cone, and the first part of the cone, were of an intense white, while the part towards the apex gradually approach ed a steel blue. Between one and a half and two minutes from the time that I saw the meteor (judging from the distance which 1 rode) I heard an explosion like a heavy peal of thunder, but not followed by the rumbling sound, which was heard as far as Clarksburg, eighty-five miles east of Parkersburg, on the Northwest Virginia railroad. The explosion was followed by a trembling of the earth, which was felt throughont this region, and was supposed to be an earthquake at thc^tinie. The nearest known point at which one of the frag ments of this meteor fell is ten or twelve miles northwest of Parkersburg, in Oiiio, and the most distatit point is on the line of the Central Ohio railroad, seventy or eighty miles off in the same direction. * * * llcspectfullv, yours, WM. C. WELLES. Death of an Army Officer.—Col Jos. Plymp- ton, of the U. S. Army, died at Staten Island on the .5th ot June. He was a lieutentint in the war ot 1>^12, and since that time has been employed in various frontier posts, and in 3Iexico, whither he went as lieutenant colonel, and took an aetrive part iu the memorable siege of Vera Cruz and at the battle, of Cerro Gordo. For his “gallant and meritorious conduct” on the latter occasion he received the brevet of colonel. His regiment, under his immediate command, also performed desperate service at the battles of Contreras and Churubusco. m CLERKS OF THE I'dlBTS, I^XECUTION, TRIAL, and APi’EARANCE DOCK- Ij ETS, ruled and printed from the most approved Thr JajHinese in Philmlvlphia.—The Japa nese Embassy arrived at Philadelphia on Satur day afternoon. An Immense crowd filled the streets, and thousands viewed the procession from the window.s, porticos and housetops. The high er personages of the Embassy looked on the ma.s- ses with official sternness, but the inferior officers and servants entered largely into the spirit of the occasion. During the evening there was an ex hibition of fireworks. Dangerous Sjwrt.—Not long ago a soldier in Strasbourg ascended to the top of the Cathedral spire and peribruied elevated gymna.stics.
